How to Show Support During a Pandemic

abril 29, 2020

If we’ve learned anything lately, it’s that we all could use a little extra support right now. Whether it’s emotional, physical, mental or financial, we’re all new to navigating this new reality, and no one is exempt from feeling the highs and lows that come along with it. Here are a few things each of us can do to show support to our family, friends, neighbors and community – which fills your vessel too - even if you’re cooped up at home.

Check in on Friends & Family

Create a schedule of weekly check ins for your friends and family, especially those who are living alone, are out of work, or who you suspect may be struggling a little more than others. A quick call or text can easily turn someone’s day around, as well as your own! Also, don’t forget about neighbors who might be elderly or at-risk. Check in to see how you can assist them by doing things like shopping, or just by offering support.

Shop Locally

One of the easiest ways to support your community is to shop locally as much as possible. While major stores and chains will most likely survive a dip in profits, smaller businesses will bear the brunt. Make a plan to order takeout from your favorite local restaurants once or twice a week, go to your local grocery store instead of major retailers, and consider buying gift cards from your favorite hairdressers, barbers and estheticians to use in the future – all while following social distancing guidelines for safety.

Donate

There are a number of amazing organizations that provide much-needed resources to those in need. Here are a few organization accepting donations:

  • Feeding America – Feeding America is one of the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organizations, working to connect people with food and end hunger.
  • Meals on Wheels – Delivers meals to seniors directly.
  • No Kid Hungry – A movement of teachers, chefs, community leaders, parents, lawmakers and CEO’s with a shared belief: no kid in America should go hungry.
  • Stay In Speak Out - A fundraising campaign organized by wedding industry professionals, with a goal of turning $5 donations for UNICEF into $5 million in just two weeks.
Don’t be Afraid to be Vulnerable

Don’t be afraid to express how you’re feeling – showing your own vulnerability can help others feel like they aren’t alone in this. We’re all experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions daily, but the silver lining is that it’s given us the opportunity to empathize. Allow yourself to feel compassion for others, and act on it when given the chancel; see if it doesn’t make you feel better too!
